On May 15, 1993 Joseph Matteucci, a seventeen year old junior attending Castro Valley High School, died from the result of senseless act of violence. In 1994 Alexandra Matteucci founded the Joseph Matteucci Foundation in honor of her son. The Joseph Matteucci foundation for Youth Non-Violence, is a 501-Cs non-profit foundation.

Since his death, Mrs. Matteucci has dedicated her life to creating and funding non-violence programs for young people, and continues to discuss these issues with students in middle schools, high schools, juvenile detention centers, second chance programs, colleges and county jails.

Alexandra Matteucci has reached out to many students, parents and coaches. She has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, as well as various radio and television programs. She speaks about the JMF youth programs and motivating young people to break the cycle of violence in sport and in life.

The foundation currently has four programs.

JMF in partnership with other agencies has worked to fund and implement mediation programs in schools. Last year programs were funded in 26 schools representing over 750 young people. All students were trained in the mediation process and are working to create a safe place for their peers to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence.

Sports Emblem Program has been approved by Little League, Babe Ruth and Pony Leagues nationally. This program has introduced over 7,000 parents coaches, and athletes to Joe's story and they have been moved to verbally pledge their support and wear the JMF emblem on the game uniform sleeve as a visible reminder of that pledge.

Stand for Peace Workshop is a program that teaches individuals strategies to achieve sportsmanship and non-violence in sport and in life. This program was introduced at the National Youth Crime Conference in March of 1999 in Denver, Colorado and will be available in the 1999-2000 school year.

Speakers Program: Alexandra Matteucci is available to speak on the subject of youth violence, the grief process, and the outcome of this tragic event in her life.
